Given below are two statements:

Statement I: Area under velocity- time graph gives the distance travelled by the body in a given time.

Statement II: Area under acceleration- time graph is equal to the change in velocity- in the given time.

In the light of given statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
  1. (A)Both Statement I and Statement II are true.
  2. (B)Statement I is correct but Statement II is false.
  3. (C)Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is true.✓ Correct
  4. (D)Both Statement I and Statement II are False.

Answer: (C)

Solution

The area under a velocity-time graph is , which equals the displacement; because velocity can be negative this is in general not the distance travelled, so the first statement is incorrect. The area under an acceleration-time graph is , which is exactly the change in velocity, so the second statement is correct. The first statement is incorrect but the second statement is true.
