The number of bent-shaped molecule/s from the following is ____

Answer: 3

Solution

Each species is judged by the arrangement of bond pairs and lone pairs on its central atom. The azide ion has an central nitrogen with no lone pair and is linear. The triiodide ion has a central iodine carrying three lone pairs in a trigonal-bipyramidal set, which places the two bonds opposite each other, so it too is linear. The nitrite ion has one lone pair on nitrogen, ozone has one lone pair on the central oxygen and sulphur dioxide has one lone pair on sulphur, and in each of these the single lone pair pushes the two bonds into a bent shape. Three of the species, the nitrite ion, ozone and sulphur dioxide, are bent.
