The polymer X - consists of linear molecules and is closely packed. It is prepared in the presence of triethylaluminium and titanium tetrachloride under low pressure. The polymer X is -
- (A)Polyacrylonitrile
- (B)Low density polythene
- (C)Polytetrafluoroethane
- (D)High density polythene✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
A Ziegler-Natta catalyst, triethylaluminium with titanium tetrachloride , polymerises ethene at low pressure and moderate temperature. The coordinated insertion of monomer gives essentially unbranched chains, so the macromolecules are linear and pack closely into a highly crystalline solid of high density. This linear, closely packed polymer formed under these conditions is high density polythene.
