A parallel plate capacitor is being charged by a time-varying current. Explain briefly how Ampere's circuital law is generalized to incorporate the effect due to the displacement current.
Solution
While the capacitor charges, a conduction current ic flows in the wires but no charge crosses the gap between the plates. Applying Ampere's law ∮B⋅dl=μ0ic to two surfaces bounded by the same loop --- one cut by the wire, one passing between the plates --- gives different answers, which is inconsistent. Maxwell removed the inconsistency by adding the displacement current id=ε0dΦE/dt, arising from the changing electric flux between the plates, so the generalized law is
∮B⋅dl=μ0(ic+ε0dtdΦE)
Between the plates ic=0 but id=0, and the two surfaces now give the same B.
∮B⋅dl=μ0(ic+ε0dΦE/dt)
