The resistivity (ρ) of semiconductor varies with temperature. Which of the following curve represents the correct behaviour
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)✓ Correct
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (B)
Solution
In a semiconductor the number density n of charge carriers rises steeply with temperature as electrons are thermally excited across the band gap. Since ρ=ne2τm and n grows much faster than the relaxation time τ falls, the resistivity decreases as temperature increases. The fall is rapid at low temperatures and becomes gentler at higher temperatures, so the ρ–T graph is a decreasing, concave-up curve.
