The starting material is the amino alcohol 2-amino-3-methylbutan-1-ol, bearing an amino group and a hydroxyl group on adjacent carbons, and it is treated with diethyl carbonate. The more nucleophilic nitrogen attacks the carbonyl of the carbonate and displaces one ethoxide, and the neighbouring hydroxyl then closes intramolecularly onto the same carbon, expelling the second ethoxide. This double substitution stitches the nitrogen and oxygen to one carbonyl carbon and gives a five-membered cyclic carbamate. The major product is 4-isopropyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one.
