Solution

This is an aldol condensation reaction. The enolate from one aldehyde attacks the carbonyl of another. Under the given conditions, the aldol product (β-hydroxy aldehyde) is formed rather than the dehydrated product. The major product is the structure in option (B) showing the hydroxyl group at the β-position.
