The I-V characteristics of a p-n junction diode in forward bias is shown in the figure. The ratio of dynamic resistance, corresponding to forward bias voltages of 2 V and 4 V respectively, is :

Solution

Dynamic resistance is

R = \frac{Δ V}{Δ i}

. From the graph, at 2 V the slope gives

Δ V_{1} \approx 0.1

V for

Δ i_{1} \approx 5

mA, so

R_{1} = 0.1/5 = 0.02

units. At 4 V,

Δ V_{2} \approx 0.2

V for

Δ i_{2} \approx 50

mA, so

R_{2} = 0.2/50 = 0.004

units. The ratio is

\frac{R _{1}}{R _{2}} = \frac{Δ V _{1}}{Δ V _{2}} \times \frac{Δ i _{2}}{Δ i _{1}} = \frac{0.1}{0.2} \times \frac{50}{5} = \frac{1}{2} \times 10 = 5 : 1
