Given below are two statements:
Statement I: PN junction diodes can be used to function as transistor simply by connecting two diodes, back to back, which acts as the base terminal.
Statement II: In the study of transistor, the amplification factor β indicates ratio of the collector current to the base current.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
- (A)Statement I is false but Statement II is true✓ Correct
- (B)Statement I is true Statement II is false
- (C)Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- (D)Both statement I and Statement II are true.
Answer: (A)
Solution
Two diodes joined back to back do not form a transistor. In a transistor the base is a single region, very thin and lightly doped, shared by both junctions, so that carriers injected by the emitter diffuse right across it and are collected before they recombine. Two separate diodes have thick, heavily doped bodies between their junctions, and no carrier reaches the far junction. The current amplification factor of a transistor in the common emitter mode is defined as , the ratio of the collector current to the base current. Statement I is false but Statement II is true.
