Solution

Novolac is a phenol-formaldehyde condensation polymer formed under acidic conditions. Formaldehyde first undergoes electrophilic substitution on phenol to give ortho- (and para-) hydroxymethylphenol, and these hydroxymethyl units then condense with further phenol molecules to extend the chain. The repeating building unit is o-hydroxymethylphenol.
