Two open beakers one containing a solvent and the other containing a mixture of that solvent with a non-volatile solute are together sealed in a container. Over time
  1. (A)the volume of the solution increases and the volume of the solvent decreases✓ Correct
  2. (B)the volume of the solution and the solvent does not change
  3. (C)the volume of the solution does not change and the volume of the solvent decreases
  4. (D)the volume of the solution decreases and the volume of the solvent increases

Answer: (A)

Solution

Pure solvent has a higher vapour pressure than the solution, because the non-volatile solute lowers it. Sealed in together, the solvent evaporates faster than it returns while the solution captures more vapour than it gives up, so there is a steady transfer of solvent from the pure beaker into the solution. Over time the solution's volume rises and the pure solvent's volume falls.
