A Cylinder containing an ideal gas (0.1 mol of 1.0dm3) is in thermal equilibrium with a large volume of 0.5 molal aqueous solution of ethylene glycol at its freezing point. If the stoppers S1 and S2 (as shown in the figure) are suddenly withdrawn, the volume of the gas in litres after equilibrium is achieved will be____
The gas is held at the freezing point of the 0.5molal ethylene glycol solution, which is depressed below 273K by ΔTf=Kfm=2.0×0.5=1.0K, so the temperature is 272K. Confined to 1.0dm3, the gas exerts P=VnRT=1.00.1×0.08×272≈2.18atm. When the stoppers are withdrawn the gas expands isothermally against the surrounding 1atm, and Boyle's law gives the new volume V2=P2P1V1=1.02.18×1.0≈2.18L.
