A uniform rectangular thin sheet ABCD of mass M has length a and breadth b, as shown in the figure. If the shaded portion HBGO is cut off, the coordinates of the centre of mass of the remaining portion will be:
(A)(35a,35b)
(B)(32a,32b)
(C)(43a,43b)
(D)(125a,125b)✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Treat the shape as the full sheet minus the piece cut away. The full sheet of mass M has its centre of mass at (2a,2b). The removed corner piece is a quarter of the sheet, so its mass is 4M and, being the corner quarter of size 2a×2b, its own centre sits at (43a,43b). The remaining mass is 43M. Balancing the x-coordinate, M⋅2a=43Mxcm+4M⋅43a, which solves to xcm=125a. The geometry is symmetric in x and y, so the same working gives ycm=125b. The centre of mass of what is left is (125a,125b).
