Which of the following statements about low density polythene is FALSE ?
  1. (A)It is a poor conductor of electricity.
  2. (B)Its synthesis requires dioxygen or a peroxide initiator as a catalyst.
  3. (C)It is used in the manufacture of buckets, dust-bins etc.✓ Correct
  4. (D)Its synthesis requires high pressure.

Answer: (C)

Solution

Low-density polythene is made under high pressure with a peroxide or oxygen initiator by free-radical polymerisation, and it is a soft, flexible, poorly conducting plastic used for films and squeeze bottles. Rigid articles like buckets and dust-bins are moulded from high-density polythene, not the low-density form. So the statement that low-density polythene is used to make buckets and dust-bins is the false one.
