A diode conducts when it is forward biased, which means its p-side is held at the higher potential and its n-side at the lower, that is the p-region joined towards the positive terminal and the n-region towards the negative. Reading the four connections against this rule, the arrangement in which the p-side faces the positive terminal and the n-side the negative is the forward-biased one that lets current flow.
