A radar has a power of 1 kW and is operating at a frequency of 10 GHz. It is located on a mountain top of height 500 m. The maximum distance upto which it can detect object located on the surface of the earth (Radius of earth =6.4×106 m) is
(A)80 km✓ Correct
(B)16 km
(C)40 km
(D)64 km
Answer: (A)
Solution
From a height h the farthest point on the ground the radar can see lies along the line tangent to the Earth, where (R+h)2=R2+d2. Expanding and dropping the tiny h2 term leaves d2=2Rh, so d=2Rh=2×6.4×106×500=6.4×109=8×104 m, that is 80 km. The quoted power and frequency play no part in this line-of-sight geometry.
