If the lattice constant of this semiconductor is decreased, then which of the following is correct?
  1. (A)All decrease
  2. (B)All increase
  3. (C) and increase but decreases
  4. (D) and decrease increases✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

When the lattice constant is reduced the atoms sit closer together and interact more strongly, which broadens the allowed energy bands. On the energy scale the conduction-band edge and the valence-band edge both shift downward as the bands widen, while the separation between them grows. So and decrease and the band gap increases.
