Which of the following properties will change when system containing solution 1 will become solution 2 ?
  1. (A)Molar heat capacity
  2. (B)Density
  3. (C)Concentration
  4. (D)Gibbs free energy✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Passing from solution 1 to solution 2 keeps the composition the same, one mole of solute per litre of water, while changing the total quantity of material. Intensive quantities, independent of amount, stay fixed: molar heat capacity, density and concentration are unchanged. An extensive quantity scales with amount, so the total Gibbs free energy differs between the two systems. The property that changes is the Gibbs free energy.
