Match List-I with List-II
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
| List-I | List-II |
|---|---|
| (A) Solution of chloroform and acetone | (I) Minimum boiling azeotrope |
| (B) Solution of ethanol and water | (II) Dimerizes |
| (C) Solution of benzene and toluene | (III) Maximum boiling azeotrope |
| (D) Solution of acetic acid in benzene | (IV) |
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
Answer: A → III, B → I, C → IV, D → II
Solution
Chloroform and acetone attract one another through hydrogen bonding between the unlike molecules, giving negative deviation from Raoult's law and a maximum boiling azeotrope. Ethanol and water, on mixing, break their own hydrogen bonds and show positive deviation, giving a minimum boiling azeotrope. Benzene and toluene are so alike that mixing changes neither the volume nor the enthalpy, so , the mark of an ideal solution. Acetic acid dissolved in benzene exists as hydrogen-bonded dimers. Hence chloroform with acetone goes with the maximum boiling azeotrope, ethanol with water with the minimum boiling azeotrope, benzene with toluene with , and acetic acid in benzene with dimerization.
