Which of the following statements are TRUE about Haloform reaction? A. Sodium hypochlorite reacts with KI to give KOI. B. KOI is a reducing agent. C. α,β-unsaturated methylketone will give iodoform reaction. D. Isopropyl alcohol will not give iodoform test. E. Methanoic acid will give positive iodoform test.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
(A)A, C & E only
(B)A, B & C only
(C)A & C only✓ Correct
(D)B, D & E only
Answer: (C)
Solution
Hypochlorite is a stronger oxidant than hypoiodite, so sodium hypochlorite oxidises iodide to hypoiodite, NaOCl+KI→NaCl+KOI, and that statement is true; KOI itself acts as an oxidising agent, not a reducing agent. An α,β-unsaturated methyl ketone such as CH3COCH=CH2 keeps the CH3CO− group and therefore gives a positive iodoform test. Isopropyl alcohol, CH3CH(OH)CH3, carries the CH3CH(OH)− unit and does give the test, so the claim that it does not is false, while methanoic acid has neither a methyl ketone nor a methyl carbinol group and gives a negative test. The true statements are the formation of KOI and the response of the α,β-unsaturated methyl ketone.
