In the chemical reactions given above A and B respectively are:
(A)CH3CH2OH and H3PO2
(B)CH3CH2Cl and H3PO2
(C)H3PO2 and CH3CH2OH
(D)H3PO2 and CH3CH2Cl✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Benzene diazonium chloride warmed with hypophosphorous acid and water is reduced, the diazonium group being replaced by hydrogen, so the major product is benzene. Benzene then carries an ethyl group only through Friedel-Crafts alkylation, which needs an alkyl halide with anhydrous AlCl3, and the ethyl group of ethylbenzene comes from chloroethane. So A is H3PO2 and B is CH3CH2Cl.
