Consider the following reaction sequence

The percentage of nitrogen in product 'T' formed is _____ %. (Nearest integer)

(Given molar mass in H: 1, C: 12, N: 14, O: 16)

Answer: 20

Solution

Nitration of benzene gives nitrobenzene (P), which Sn/HCl reduces to aniline (Q). Acetylation of aniline with acetic anhydride gives acetanilide (R); nitration of acetanilide, directed para by the acetamido group, gives -nitroacetanilide as the major product (S). Acid hydrolysis of the amide in S releases the amine, giving -nitroaniline (T), ONCHNH, of formula CHNO and molar mass . The nitrogen content is , which to the nearest integer is 20%.
