Starting from toluene, free-radical chlorination in ultraviolet light substitutes at the benzylic position, turning the −CH3 group into −CH2Cl to give benzyl chloride. Treating this with sodium in dry ether is a Wurtz-type coupling that removes the two chlorines and joins the benzylic carbons, so the product is 1,2-diphenylethane, Ph−CH2−CH2−Ph.
