Which one of the following methods is neither meant for the synthesis nor for separation of amines?
  1. (A)Hinsberg method
  2. (B)Hofmann method
  3. (C)Wurtz reaction✓ Correct
  4. (D)Curtius reaction

Answer: (C)

Solution

This asks for the odd method out, the one with nothing to do with amines. Hinsberg's test separates and distinguishes primary, secondary and tertiary amines; Hofmann's bromamide reaction makes primary amines from amides; and the Curtius rearrangement makes amines from acyl azides. The Wurtz reaction, by contrast, couples two alkyl halides with sodium to build larger alkanes, , so it neither prepares nor separates amines.
