Consider the following sequence of reactions :
(i)
(see structure)
(ii)

(iv) Na, Ether

Molar mass of the product formed (A) is
_____ .

Answer: 154

Solution

Starting from nitrobenzene, the sequence runs:

(i) reduces the nitro group to an amine: nitrobenzene aniline.

(ii) at diazotises the amine: aniline benzenediazonium chloride.

(iii) carries out a Sandmeyer reaction, replacing the diazonium group with chlorine: benzenediazonium chloride chlorobenzene.

(iv) , ether effects a Wurtz–Fittig coupling of two molecules of chlorobenzene, joining the two aryl groups directly:

The product A is biphenyl, , with molar mass g/mol.
