The azo-dye (Y) formed in the following reactions is
Sulphanilic acid +NaNO2+CH3COOH→X
X +
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Sulphanilic acid reacts with NaNO2 and CH3COOH to form its diazonium salt (X); since sulphanilic acid exists as a zwitterion (−O3S−C6H4−NH3+), the diazotization gives an internal diazonium salt, −O3S−C6H4−N2+.
X couples with 1-naphthylamine at the ring position para to the amino group — the position of highest electron density on the naphthalene ring — forming the azo linkage −N=N−.
The resulting azo dye (Y) is HO3S−C6H4−N=N−C10H6−NH2, a red dye formed by this Griess–Ilosvay coupling.
