Given below are two statements :
Statement I: Aniline reacts with con. followed by heating at gives paminobenzene sulphonic acid, which gives blood red colour in the 'Lassaigne's test'.
Statement II: In Friedel - Craft's alkylation and acylation reactions, aniline forms salt with the catalyst. Due to this, nitrogen of aniline aquires a positive charge and acts as deactivating group.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- (A)Statement I is false but statement II is true
- (B)Both statement I and statement II are false
- (C)Statement I is true but statement II is false
- (D)Both statement I and statement II are true✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Aniline on sulphonation at 453-473 K gives sulphanilic acid (p-aminobenzenesulphonic acid); as it carries both N and S, Lassaigne's test shows the blood-red Fe(SCN) colour, so Statement I is correct. Aniline also complexes with AlCl3 and the N acquires positive charge, deactivating the ring in Friedel-Crafts, so Statement II is correct. Hence both statements are true.
