Assuming that the reaction proceeds to completion, then 137 mg of 4-nitrotoluene will produce ____ mg of B . (Given molar mass in gmol−1 H: 1, C: 12, N: 14, O : 16,Br:80 )
(A)301
(B)146
(C)228✓ Correct
(D)208
Answer: (C)
Solution
Tin and hydrochloric acid reduce the nitro group of 4-nitrotoluene, and after neutralisation the product A is 4-methylaniline (p-toluidine), CH3C6H4NH2. Acetic anhydride acetylates the amino group to give p-acetotoluidide, CH3C6H4NHCOCH3; the acetamido group is strongly activating and ortho/para directing, and since the para position is already occupied by the methyl group, bromination with Br2 in acetic acid introduces one bromine ortho to it. The product B is N-(2-bromo-4-methylphenyl)acetamide, C9H10BrNO, of molar mass 228g mol−1. From 137mg of 4-nitrotoluene, n=137137×10−3=1×10−3mol, and with one-to-one stoichiometry the mass of B is 1×10−3×228=228mg.
