Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)✓ Correct
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (B)
Solution
The phenol reacts with nitrous acid, generated in situ from sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid, which is a weak electrophile and attacks the ring at the position para to the hydroxyl group, giving the para-nitroso phenol as intermediate A. Ammonium hydrosulphide then reduces the nitroso group to a primary amino group, leaving the hydroxyl and isopropyl substituents untouched. Compound B is therefore the aminophenol carrying an −NH2 group para to the −OH group.
